Obituary – Dr Somnath Mukherjee – Prabasi of New England

Obituary – Dr Somnath Mukherjee

It is with great sadness we announce the unfortunate news of the demise of one of our stalwarts and Founding Members of Prabasi, Dr. Somnath Mukherjee (Somnath-Da).

Somnath-Da was one of the founding members of the first Bengali organization in Massachusetts – Prabasi. He was also one of the founding members of Bengalees of New England. We were very fortunate to have such a compassionate, loving, and moral person amongst us in our community. He was also a very generous and big-hearted individual.

Somnath-Da was a mathematician, and he had a long, illustrious career as a Professor of Mathematics, University of Massachusetts, Boston. He was also a brilliant bridge player and an avid photographer. He had ranked first in Massachusetts in contract bridge and third across the entire country. We are all familiar with the photographs he took at Durga Pujas and other occasions and then distributed to our delight.

Somnath-Da was born on November 11th, 1941, and is survived by his wife Bani Mukherjee (Bani di); his two sons and daughters-in-law; and his much-beloved granddaughter. He will be deeply missed by many of us who loved him dearly.

The funeral service shall be held at:
Hurley Funeral Home
134 S. Main Street, Randolph, MA
7th March 2022 at 10AM

His death is a profound loss for us all. Our deepest condolences to his family. May his soul rest in peace.
